Barcelona - Spain's Second Smartest City

Barcelona

According IDC’s Smart Cities Index Ranking, Barcelona is the second “smartest” city in Spain. In relation to Málaga, Barcelona scores less high in the smartness dimensions, but compensated with a much better starting position (the enabling forces). From the outset, Barcelona benefitted from high adoption of ICT and mobile solutions. In the smartness dimensions, Barcelona excels in smart mobility.

Barcelona is a leader in Spain in terms of revolutionizing its transport sector, and has been designated the hub of innovation for electric vehicles. Spain’s transport sector is responsible for 37.9% of final consumption of energy and accounts for more than a quarter of total CO2 emissions. Spain is actively facilitating the acquisition of low emission vehicles, for instance by offering subsidies (of up to €7,000 per vehicle) for plug-in hybrid or pure electric plug-in vehicles.

Barcelona’s LIVE project has made it the innovation hub for electric vehicles. LIVE is a public-private platform which aims to support and promote the development of electric mobility in the city and metropolitan area of Barcelona. The development partners in the project are Barcelona City Council (Environment, Mobility, and Economic Promotion), the Government of Catalonia (Catalan Energy Institute), Endesa, and Seat. Other partners and collaborators include IDAE (the Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy, Ministry of Industry), UPC, IREC, Leitat, STA (Technical Automotive Society), Barcelona Digital, TMB, BSM, Regesa, Tabasa, Saba Abertis, Catmoto, Nissan/Renault, Toyota, Siemens, Volt-Tour, Avele/Avere, Altran, Quimera, Idiada, RACC, Circutor, and Initzia.

Talking Barça Podcast 6 - Spain Internationals, Barça News and Real Zaragoza

In Talking Barça Podcast 6, Nic and Simon take on an irreverant tone! We take a critical look at Spain's Friendlies against England and Costa Rica. The Hospitalet game saw the debuts of Tello and Rafinha but the excessive ticket prices lead Simon takes to extol the virtues of his other love - Hospitalet's rivals in Segunda B - UE Sant Andreu. We then have a dig at Barça President Sandro Rosell and wind up with a confident overview of game against Real Zaragoza and a more enthusiastic preview of next Wednesday's Champions League tie against AC Milan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Spain Internationals against England and Costa Rica

Casilla's makes a mistake against Costa RicaSpain's International Friendlies against England and Costa Rica have been something of a disappointment this week.

The 1-0 defeat against England showed Spain getting the better of the football but without Messi's killer instinct in attack, Spain struggled to put the ball in the back of the net.

We weren't impressed by England - according to Simon, 'a bunch of blond Italians who also play rugby' - and express our concern that Vicente del Bosque bases the national side too much on Barça.

The 2-2 draw against Costa Rica was also frustrating, particularly for Iker Casillas who made a dreadful mistake in the first goal and so marred his record-breaking 247th international appearnce for La Roja. It was nice to see David Villa get another international goal, though.

FC Barcelona News

Sandro Rosell on Al JazheeraNext we turn our attention to Barça's Copa del Rey tie against Segunda B side L'Hospitalet last week. It was an efficient performance from the team in quite difficult circumstances. Playing against lower division sides who are fired up is always tough.

We were disappointed by the turn out at Feixa Llarga, and Simon takes the opportunity to sing the praises of his other great love - UE Sant Andreu - who also play in Segunda B Group III. Compared with the 45 Euro that tickets cost for Hospitalet v Barça, prices at Sant Andreu are a lot lower for this kind of game add that to a great ground, a great shirt and great fans and the result is a full stadium!

The next piece of FC Barcelona News this week was President Sandro Rosell's interview on Arab telivision channel Al Jazeera in which, amongst other things, he talked about the decision-making process at the club and the issue of programming games at 12 o'clock lunchtime. Rosell's snobbish attitude irked Nic on both topics.

Nic takes issue with Rosell when he talks about the 'club' taking decisions when in actual, fact as President of the Barça, it's Rosell and his cabal that take the decisions. In a similar vein, Nic also complains about Rosell's reasons for being against 12 o'clock kick offs. 'That's not the way things are done here in Catalunya!' says the Barça President. Nic things that this rule apllies to a small group of upper-middle class Catalans, but there are many ways of enjoying football - down the bar or a lazy morning and then going to the match and being back home in time for lunch.

FC Barcelona v Real Zaragoza

FC Barcelona v Real ZaragozaSimon and Nic close Talking Barça 6 with a look at FC Barcelona's forthcoming games.

We feel pretty confident about Barça's chances in Saturday's game against Real Zaragoza in Camp Nou. Zaragoza are one of our favourites for the drop, and the Aragones club have only spent half a million on new players this season.

That 500,000 went on Portuguese International Helder Postiga whilst the other new signings either came on free transfer or are at Zaragoza on loan. Although a number of these players are internationals, the club has serious financial problems and will have difficulties paying them. It's hard to see where the motivation to beat Barça will come from.

We wind up this week's podcast by looking forward to next Wednesday's crucial Champions League tie against AC Milan in San Siro, and once again recommend listeners NOT TO BUY Zlatan Ibrahimovic's book!

Learn Spanish - 'Libre' de Nino Bravo - The Story Behind The Song

cid:<a href=image001.jpg@01CC363E.BE778D40" width="220" />
cid:<a href=image002.jpg@01CC363E.BE778D40" width="243" />
cid:<a href=image003.jpg@01CC363E.BE778D40" width="220" />

cansado de soñar;
pero TRAS LA FRONTERA está su hogar,
su mundo y SU CIUDAD.
Piensa que la ALAMBRADA sólo
es un trozo de metal
algo que nunca puede detener
sus ansias de volar.

Libre,
y SABRÉ LO QUE ES AL FIN LA LIBERTAD.

Con su amor por bandera se marchó
cantando una canción;
marchaba tan feliz que NO ESCUCHÓ
LA VOZ QUE LE LLAMÓ.
Y TENDIDO EN EL SUELO SE QUEDÓ,
SONRIENDO Y SIN HABLAR;

      No gracias... no fumo

Talking Barça 5 - Athletic Bilbao, Hospitalet and England v Spain

In Talking Barça Podcast 5, we air our disagreements on the Athletic-Barça match particularly regarding Cesc Fàbregas's performance, moan a little about Guardiola and agree that Piqué isn't up to scratch at the moment. We go on to tear Ibrahimovic to shreds, discuss Barça's match in the Copa del Rey against Hospitalet and Spain (or as we prefer 'Barça and friends') versus England.

Piqué Laments His Own Goal Against Athletic

Despite enjoying a great game of football between Athletic and Barça, coming away from San Mamés with only a point was somewhat disappointing.

There is some debate about the effectiveness of Cesc Fàbregas in the centre forward position. Both of us feel that the side would work better with the Arenys player coming in from a deeper second line of attack as a False 10, as this would allow him to link up with a more offensive Messi in the centre of the forward line.

The problem seems to be based on Pep Guardiola's desire to 'reinvent the wheel'. He has an offensive set up that works but is continually experimenting. Wouldn't it be better if he stuck to a tried and tested formula?

Piqué's performance was disappointing - particularly his involvement in Athletic's second goal. He obviously has every right to be in a relationship with Shakira but when the media attention affects his ability to come up with the goods on the pitch, as Barça fans we have every right to question him.

What's more when Zlatan Ibrahimovic was at Camp Nou, Piqué and the Swedish striker were close friends. In the light of Ibrahimovic's absurdly exaggerated statements about his relationship with Guardiola, there is even more room for doubt.

Hospitalet v FC Barcelona

Barça's next match is in the last 16 of the Copa del Rey against Segunda B side L'Hospitalet.

Currently second in Spain's regional Third Division, the Llobregat club have just beaten Simon's great love UE Sant Andreu at Feixa Llarga, so if they take a drubbing from Barça, he will be more than satisfied.

There are some doubts about the players available to Pep Guardiola as many of the lads from Barça B have been called up for Spain's Under-21 International against England.

As the game will be shown on local television, this would have been a great opportunity to see the depth of FC Barcelona's future talent in action

Spain v England

Spain's match against England at Wembley calls our national identity into question.

We will both be supporting Spain or Barça and Friends as we irreverently prefer to call them. Why?

Well, it's a question of familiarity and convenience. We are both Barça supporters and avid followers of La Liga so we're much more familiar with the group of players who make up the Spain squad.

It's also a question of enjoying an easy life. Having lived in Barcelona since the late-1980s, we're both pretty integrated into life here and quite simply, having to go down the bar and support a different team ends up being a bit of a hassle.

Given the fact that Spain are currently the best international side in the world and England are pretty mediocre and hasve been for some time, we'd have to ba nuts not to support La Roja. We predict a 2-1 or 3-1 victory for Spain!
